Diving into history at the London 1948 Summer Olympic Games, Victoria “Vicki” Manalo Draves (1924–2010) became the first Asian American gold medalist. She was also the first woman to be awarded gold medals for both the ten-meter platform and the three-meter springboard. Born and raised in San Francisco’s South of Market district, the Filipina American athlete began diving as a teenager, then pursued a path of professional training, all the while navigating the discriminatory policies of segregated public pools and private swimming clubs.

Inspired by this renowned athlete, Jenifer K Wofford pictures Draves suspended in a pike in a vast space of gradient color, flanked by two other moments in the dive sequence. The San Francisco–based interdisciplinary artist describes imagining a “soft inward focus with the mannered tension in Draves’s position—both completely on display and totally inside herself.”

The mural VMD (2024) expands Wofford’s related recent series of the same title, featuring paintings, works on paper, and free takeaway prints distributed at public and Filipino American community events. This SFMOMA commission and Wofford’s larger Draves project engage the athlete in a manner more abstract than narrative, exploring the “tensions of surface and submersion in the dreamlike world of her diving practice.” -- Tanya Zimbardo
